Step back in time and experience the charm of Connecticut’s rich maritime history at the Captain Stannard House. This historic Westbrook CT hotels story is deeply rooted in community and a place for gathering.
From Sea Captain to Boat Captain – A Legacy Reborn
a storied history…

restored with purpose…
Built in 1872, the Captain Stannard House was originally home to Sea Captain Elbert Stannard. Elbert Stannard was born in Westbrook, Connecticut. At 14, he went out to sea. Returning as Captain in 1872, he built a proper prideful house.
The home first began welcoming guests as the Menunketesuck Inn in the early 1920’s. Over the years, many businesses occupied the home including, the St. Charles Inn, the Olde English Tavern, and Holly’s Hotel & Seafood Restaurant. In 1931, a large barn from a nearby property was relocated and added to the main home. You will notice the architecture difference in the dining room, living room and the upstairs hallways. Holly’s Barn was used as a community gathering place, workforce housing, and Kingsley Hall dormitory.
Deeply rooted in the town’s history, it quickly became a beloved gathering place for locals. Over the decades, its walls have witnessed laughter, milestones, and countless connections. In 1972 a dramatic fire threatened to destroy the inn. However it was lovingly restored in the 1980s and the gorgeous back porch was added. Now, this beautiful home returns to its roots as a community-forward inn under the care of a modern boat captain and family, continuing the legacy that began over 150 years ago.
Today, Captain Stannard is a haven for travelers, history buffs, and anyone seeking a peaceful getaway. Our innkeepers have lovingly preserved the building’s charm while adding modern comforts to enhance your stay. Its quirky hallways and passages tell the story of its amazing past. From its gracious porches to its warm, inviting rooms, every detail has been curated to honor the past and celebrate the present.
