A BVI-Inspired Cocktail with a Smoky Twist and a Love Story at Its Heart

🌴 From the Soggy Dollar to Westbrook: Where It All Began

For Meri and Marcus, the British Virgin Islands weren’t just a vacation — they were the backdrop for adventure, discovery, and unforgettable flavors. One sun-drenched afternoon on Jost Van Dyke, they along with their salty crew of bareboating friends, waded up to the legendary Soggy Dollar Bar, and ordered what everyone else seemed to be sipping: a Painkiller

For Marcus, It was love at first sip.

That creamy blend of rum, coconut, pineapple, and orange — dusted with nutmeg — quickly became their island cocktail. But being the spirited adventurers they are, Meri and Marcus couldn’t resist putting their own spin on it. And so, born of memory and mixology, came The Captain’s Smoked Pineapple Painkiller

A nod to that first taste at Soggy Dollar, their version deepens the flavor with grilled pineapple, lending it a rich, smoky complexity that perfectly balances the tropical sweetness.

  • 1 oz Coconut Cream

  • Charred Pineapple Wedge, for garnish

  1. Shake all ingredients with ice.
  1. Strain into an ice-filled tiki or rocks glass.
  1. Garnish with nutmeg and a grilled pineapple wedge.

Island Adventures That Inspired the Flavor

Meri and Marcus’s twist on the Painkiller isn’t just about flavor — it’s about experience. Their time Bareboating with friends in the BVIs was filled with incredible stops and stories that inspired this cocktail:

🛥️ The Moorings

They charted their own 464 Leopard Power Catameran, cruising the islands in comfort, from secluded coves to vibrant beach bars.  With Captain Marcus, and Co-Captain Eggy, at the helm, their first mates, Meri & Leslie navigated the islands.

🏝️ Jumping Off the Willy T – Norman Island

No trip to the BVIs is complete without cliff-diving and cocktails off the infamous floating bar. Marcus and the rest of the crew made the leap. . . Meri cheered — Painkiller in hand.

🍸 Beach Bar Bliss at Bitter End Yacht Club

Ravaged by hurricane, the beautifully rebuilt Bitter End has ties back to Connecticut as well, as the owners are from Darien.  It’s a perfect spoke for a leisurely afternoon watching the boats roll in and swapping stories with other salty souls.  You will find the Bitter End Burgee on the walls of The Stannard, and much of the décor is inspired by their visit to The Bitter End.

🛵 Scooters to Tipsy’s on Anegada

Island scooters + flamingo sightings + cold drinks at Tipsy’s = pure magic. They say this ride might’ve been the most fun they’ve ever had on land, but that was after a few of Anne’s yummy drinks.  This beautifully remote bar on the beautifully remote island of Anegada is like heaven.  Not impacted by the cruise ships, as some other islands are, you can find peace, sea turtles, beach side lobster dinners and a chill vibe.  Anegada is always a favorite of the whole crew.
